National news bulletins scheduled in IST
Every major news channel in India, Doordarshan News, Aaj Tak, India Today, NDTV, Republic TV, Times Now, schedules its national bulletins in IST. The 09:00 bulletin is at 09:00 IST in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Guwahati, even though the sun rises two hours earlier in the northeast.
There is no separate “eastern feed” or “western feed” for news. The same anchor, the same clock, the same scroll ticker airs across the country.
Doordarshan and private channels: single IST feed
Doordarshan, India’s public broadcaster, has used a single IST schedule since its inception in 1959. Private satellite channels follow the same model. A channel like Star Plus or Zee TV uplinks one feed from a Mumbai or Noida broadcast centre, and that feed is distributed to cable and DTH operators nationwide at the same IST minute.
Satellite TV channels can run separate regional language feeds (a Hindi feed and a Tamil feed), but both adhere to IST. The clock on the studio wall and the time code in the playout server are always IST.
Prime time: 20:00-22:00 IST
The most-watched television slot in India is 20:00-22:00 IST. This is when:
- GEC (General Entertainment Channel) soaps air.
- Reality show finals and weekend movie premieres are scheduled.
- Major news debates and prime time news bulletins run.
Why 20:00-22:00? It matches the time when most Indians are home from work and after the evening meal. Dinner in metros like Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru is commonly 21:00-23:00. The slot is fixed in IST. A show that airs at 21:00 IST in Delhi airs at 21:00 IST in Bengaluru, even though Bengaluru’s solar sunset is later.
When do international broadcasters air their South Asia feeds?
Global broadcasters with dedicated South Asia feeds, BBC News, CNN International, Al Jazeera, schedule their India-specific programming to align with IST prime time.
- BBC News South Asia feed slots its flagship bulletin at 20:00 IST and repeats key interviews during the 20:00-22:00 window.
- Al Jazeera’s India-focused bulletin airs at 21:00 IST.
- CNN International’s South Asia commercial break is timed for 21:30 IST.
These broadcasters maintain separate playlists for the South Asia region, with promo slots and ad breaks sold for the IST audience.
Why do some channels schedule earlier in South India?
A few channels split their prime time into “north” and “south” windows. The clock does not change.
- A Tamil-language channel may schedule its news at 18:00 IST, earlier than the Hindi prime time, because Tamil Nadu’s dinner hour often starts earlier.
- A Hindi GEC may run its weekend movie from 20:00 IST, while a Malayalam channel runs its movie from 19:30 IST.
Both use IST. The variation is in content timing, not time zone. No channel shifts to a different UTC offset for any region.
How to schedule an ad or event for Indian TV audiences
- Book the 20:00-22:00 IST slot for maximum reach.
- Use IST for all scheduling. Even if you are in a different time zone, convert to IST. Do not assume a “local time” for a city.
- For South India-specific audiences, consider 19:00-21:00 IST, but confirm with the channel’s ad sales team.
