When do Indian classrooms open and close?

The standard day across most states runs 07:30-14:00 or 08:00-14:30 IST. Kerala follows it. Punjab follows it. The core teaching block sits at roughly 6 to 6.5 hours, with a 15-20 minute morning assembly and a 30-40 minute lunch break folded in.

Do Indian schools run on Saturdays?

A large number of Indian campuses also operate on Saturday, but for a shorter session. The common Saturday timing is 07:30-12:00 IST. Many institutions label Saturday an "activity day" and fill it with sports, clubs, or remedial classes rather than a full academic timetable.

Sunday is a full off day for nearly all campuses.

Summer timings in hot regions: 07:00-12:30

In states where summer heat is intense, campuses shift their start time earlier to finish before the worst of the afternoon sun. This applies especially in Rajasthan, interior Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.

The summer routine typically runs from April to June. During this period, hours move to 07:00-12:30 IST. That cuts total time by 1-2 hours compared with the winter schedule.

Region Winter (November, February) Summer (April, June)
Rajasthan 07:30-14:00 IST 07:00-12:30 IST
Interior Maharashtra 08:00-14:30 IST 07:00-12:30 IST

Why the early start: heat and daylight

The main reason is to avoid peak afternoon heat. By finishing at 12:30 or 14:00, children are off the roads and home before the hottest part of the day.

Daylight is the second factor. In New Delhi on the December solstice, sunrise is 07:09 IST and sunset is 17:28 IST: only 10 hours 19 minutes of daylight. A 07:30 start grabs the first light. On the June solstice, sunrise is 05:23 IST and sunset is 19:21 IST, giving almost 14 hours of daylight. Even with an early start, there is plenty of light after class for outdoor play.

Regional variations: north vs south, urban vs rural

While the core hours are consistent, real differences exist.

  • South India (Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka): Institutions often start nearer 08:00 IST and end at 14:30 or 15:00 IST. The heat is less extreme than in the north-west, so summer timings are less common.
  • North India (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi): Campuses tend to start earlier (07:30 IST) and finish by 14:00 IST. Summer timings are widely adopted.
  • Rural areas: Village institutions may start earlier (07:00 IST) to allow children to help with farming or household chores later in the day. They may also close for a longer midday break (12:00-14:00) during harvest seasons.
  • Private vs government: Government institutions in many states follow the same hours but may have a shorter lunch break. Private campuses often run a longer day, sometimes until 15:00 IST with extra-curricular activities.

How school hours in IST affect your schedule

If you need to call an office, pick up a child, or schedule a delivery, the safest window is 07:30-14:00 IST Monday to Friday. For Saturday, assume 07:30-12:00 IST. During April to June in hot states, shift everything 30-60 minutes earlier.

For business hours (offices, banks, markets) that run alongside these timings, see Indian business hours in IST. For the current time in key cities like Rajasthan or Maharashtra, use the city clock pages.
